Regulatory sign
Stop sign
The STOP sign is the only octagonal (eight-sided) sign on Irish roads. It requires every driver to come to a complete stop -- not just slow down -- at the stop line.
When you see it
- ◆ Come to a complete stop at the white stop line before the junction.
- ◆ Stop even if the road appears clear -- a rolling stop is an offence.
- ◆ Give way to all traffic on the major road before moving off.
- ◆ Its unique octagon shape is recognisable even if covered by snow or dirt.
