Theory Test

Theory Test Ireland

How long is the Irish driver theory test?

Quick answer

You have 45 minutes to answer all 40 questions on the Irish driver theory test. That works out to about one minute per question, which most candidates find sufficient.

The 45-minute limit

The clock starts once the test begins and you have 45 minutes for the 40 questions -- roughly one minute per question. You can review and change your answers before you submit, so use any time remaining to go back over uncertain answers.

Plan to arrive early

While the test itself is 45 minutes, plan for the whole appointment to take longer. Arrive at the Prometric test centre early for ID checks and a short briefing. Latecomers may be turned away and lose the fee.

Practise with the timer on

Time pressure is rarely the problem on the theory test -- misreading questions is. Practising under a real 45-minute timer builds a calm, steady pace and ensures you read each question fully before selecting your answer.
