Theory Test Ireland
How many questions are on the Irish driver theory test?
Quick answer
The Irish driver theory test has 40 multiple-choice questions. You get 45 minutes to answer them, and you must answer at least 35 correctly (out of 40) to pass.
How the 40 questions work
Every candidate sits 40 multiple-choice questions drawn at random from a large question bank compiled by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The questions span all five study areas: rules of the road, hazard perception, safe driving, vehicle safety, and signs and the learner system.
Question formats
Each question asks you to pick the single correct answer from four options. Read each question carefully -- some are phrased as "which of the following is correct?" while others describe a scenario. There is no negative marking.
How to be ready for any of them
Because the 40 questions are drawn at random, the only reliable preparation is to cover all five study areas. Timed 40-question mocks that mirror the real exam conditions are the fastest way to find your weak areas and fix them before the day.
