Theory Test

Theory Test Ireland

How long is the Irish theory test certificate valid?

Quick answer

Your Irish driver theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you pass. You must apply for a learner permit within that 2-year window, otherwise you will need to retake the theory test.

Two-year window to apply

Once you pass the theory test, you have 2 years to apply for your first learner permit. The certificate does not extend automatically -- if you do not apply within 2 years, you will need to pass the theory test again before you can get a permit.

Apply for your learner permit promptly

Apply for your learner permit through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) at ndls.ie. You will need your theory test pass certificate number, along with valid ID, a passport photo, proof of PPSN, and the permit application fee.

Keep your certificate safe

You will receive a pass certificate at the Prometric test centre on the day. Keep it safe as you will need the reference number for your learner permit application. Confirm the current application process on ndls.ie.
