Irish speed limits

Speed limits are one of the most-tested topics on the Irish driver theory test. Knowing the correct limit for each road type is essential -- getting it wrong on the day costs marks.

Key facts to remember

  • Motorways: 120 km/h maximum for cars and light vehicles.
  • National roads (single carriageway): 100 km/h.
  • Regional (R) roads: 80 km/h.
  • Rural local (L) roads: 60 km/h (reduced from 80 km/h on 7 February 2025).
  • Built-up areas: 50 km/h (unless otherwise signed).
  • School zones when in operation: 30 km/h.

Lower limits apply to buses, trucks, vehicles towing trailers, and learner drivers on certain road types. Always obey any posted sign, which overrides the default limit.
