Rules of the Road
You are driving in heavy rain on an open road. What following distance should you maintain from the vehicle ahead?
- ○One second — brakes work the same in rain
- ○Two seconds — the same as dry conditions
- ✓At least four seconds to allow for increased stopping distances
- ○Six seconds, as rain doubles stopping distance
Correct answer
At least four seconds to allow for increased stopping distances
In wet conditions, braking distances increase significantly. You should at least double the dry-weather two-second rule, giving a minimum of four seconds in rain.
