Theory Test

Hazard and Risk Perception

What is the thinking distance component of stopping distance?

Correct answer

The distance the vehicle travels from when the driver perceives a hazard to when the foot reaches the brake

Thinking (or reaction) distance is the distance covered during the driver's reaction time — from seeing the hazard to pressing the brake. It increases with speed and with driver fatigue or distraction.
